Motivating Others?

One theme among the many commonly accepted definitions of management is the coordination of resources to achieve objectives.  For our purposes, we offer the following definition based on its relevance to employee buy-in: the purpose of management is to create results through people.  Creating results through people is affected by many things, including corporate culture, personality, managerial perspective, management style, and even the situation.

Motivating employees is often a key concern for managers.  Understanding the Control-Influence model (see “Control vs Influence” post), managers begin to recognize that they can’t really motivate other people, they can only create an environment that allows them to motivate themselves.  It should be noted that people commonly refer to motivating others, when in fact what they are really doing is creating an opportunity for someone to motivate themselves.

As a result, the question is not, how do I motivate my employees, but rather, how can I create an environment that allows my employees to motivate themselves?  How can I assist my employees in buying-in to what we are doing and how we do it?
